Meeting the challenges of GB system operation talk by Xiaoyao Zhou, 17th November, 2017

Changes in the generation mix and demand side combined with new technologies coming to the system bring a number of challenges and opportunities for power system operation. This presentation details challenges facing system operator today and how those challenges are managed in real time operation.

Dr Xiaoyao Zhou received his PhD from the University of Bath in 2006. He is a member of the IET and a Chartered Engineer.

He joined UK National Grid in 2006, first as a Power Systems Engineer in the National Grid’s System Design group, working on connection designs for nuclear power generation, offshore wind farm and HVDC systems. He then joined system operator as a system analysis manager in 2011, leading a power system engineering team that is responsible for developing future system operational plan. Between 2013-2016, Dr. Zhou acted as the data and modelling manager responsible for maintaining an offline power systems model of the National Grid’s network. Working with the industry, he is now a technical policy manager that ensures the GB Grid Code, Distribution Code and Security and Quality of Supply Standards (SQSS) remain fit for purpose.
